The ‘Pathways’ body of work was initially inspired by my experiences as a stutterer combined with a disused Tungsten mine and the paths and tracks of Dartmoor National Park. Walking the paths and tracks and with the solitude I was able to draw parallels with the way I chose to alter my speech and the choices enforced upon me to divert too alternative pathways. The paintings are not illustrations of found pathways but imagined spaces, mistaken pathways, pathways aspired too and pathways that come to a cul-de-sac. I am not alone in having to find these pathways we have a choice, the paintings are about those choices.
Technique
I paint instinctively ,mainly using a linear language evolved from using a biro pen and a pencil as a young person. Whilst I was wandering around Hemerdon Mine I noticed discarded disc cutting blades and the detritus of mining. It occurred to me that using these objects to apply the paint would keep an integrity with the mine. Most these paintings are formed utilising disc cutting blades and a palette knife and applied impasto
